A while ago I posted (here) about the practicalities of wearing vintage in the real world, when a change of job meant a complete wardrobe rethink for me! I thought I'd revisit this topic in the form of a video, so you can see the types of vintage style that I wear to the office every day, and what I have to save for weekends.
This is only my second video so please bear with me on this learning curve - I should have put better lighting in place, so apologies if this is a bit dark.
What vintage styles do you consider appropriate for your workplace? Do you find yourself toning down your style or can you go all out?

Excellent advice and examples, from the immensely beautiful dress + cape at the beginning to the accessories at the end, I enjoyed every piece you highlighted. You really having a strikingly lovely wardrobe, too, may I just add.

Thank you sweet Jessica, I am glad you liked what I picked out to share. The camera didn't show the full chaos of my wardrobe, it desperately needs a big tidy up and sort out, so maybe that's another video! X
DeleteLove it! I'm always walking this line. In fact, I believe that's how I found your blog -- I commented on By Gum By Golly about this, and you replied! I also love the voyeuristic aspect of getting to peek in your closet. It's different seeing people's actual closets rather than styled outfit posts. Keep on with the videos!
ReplyDeleteThank your for your encouragement Amanda! Everybody styles things quite differently so I too quite like seeing pieces themselves that people buy, not just a whole look. X
DeleteThank you for the advice, I've always been afraid of wearing vintage in the real world. I kind of look at vintage as something I use to dress up – I always worry about ruining it since they can be old and delicate!

That is a worry with old and fragile garments - that's why I mainly wear vintage repro or vintage styled items from modern shops! But I love the styles too much just to save for special occasions, so if I can find a '50s style skirt for a fraction of the price of 'true' vintage then I can afford to wear it more often! Thanks so much for stoppijng by x
DeleteI used to wear vintage for work, but I have a lot of modern work wear which was taking up space in my wardrobe and not being worn, so I've gone back to wearing modern things. I'm lucky in that I am able to wear pretty much whatever I want for work, within reason (I need to look smart and appropriate to the job). I did tone down my vintage quite considerably for work though, compared to what I wear outside of work. A lot of my choices were similar to yours.
ReplyDeleteI think that's my downfall - as much as I love vintage, I love modern clothes too, and I have both in my wardrobe and have to try and get them worn equally! Interesting to hear that a lot of your choices were simliar to mine, I hope that means I'm on the right track. P x
DeleteSmashing video. Like you I don't work in a formal dress code environment - thank goodness! I tend to wear the sort of things you do and, like you, love a good brogue!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed the video- thought the light quality was fine and really enjoyed having a nosy in your wardrobe :)
Just wondering - what do you use to video/edit? (Looks great!)
Thank you, that's great to hear some feedback! I borrowed a Flipcam, handy little thing, and it comes with its own software to do basic editing, nothing fancy. The picture quality's good, I think they're reasonably priced too. P x
DeleteWell done on your second video - it can take a while to get the hang of it! I know I cringe at some of my early youtube videos, haha!
ReplyDeleteI have a very few vintage pieces that I wear to work, but they aren't delicate and I usually pair them with modern pieces so I feel they look okay :)

I will have to check out some of your Youtube videos for inspiration and guidance! Thanks so much for stopping by. P x
DeleteGreat idea to start doing videos, it suits you!!! :) personally I actually dress down for work, I'm a retail assistant in an independent business so there are no rules for uniform but I am on my feet all day, so I bought my first ever pair of converse to cope! When I have things my way I prefer dresses everytime
ReplyDeleteOh definitely, if you're on your feet all day then comfort comes first! Nice that you can dress up outside of work - I think whether you dress up or down, it's nice to have something a bit different to wear in your leisure time x
DeleteI liked this video a lot. I have a tendency to watch the first 1-2 minutes and then quit, but this one I watched completely. It was interesting and very useful for possible future jobs, if I ever land a job successfully. It was also very nice that you mentioned how to tone down the style, since I'm sometimes a bit flashy with my style, but I guess I can dress up like a princess if I want to as long as I'm not working. ^^
ReplyDeleteI need some vintage styled tops, but haven't found any so it was really nice that you mentioned some brands of the clothes you have. I love Collectif clothes, but I guess I need to check out those other brands as well.
I'm looking forward to new posts and videos :)
That's great that you enjoyed it and found it useful, glad I didn't bore you! Do check out some of those brands, they have a wide selection. Best of luck with the job hunt, and keep on dressing like a Princess! X
Delete*applause* Wonderful video! You definitely hit on some of the big players in my own work wardrobe, too. Those basics definitely come in handy when you're dressing for work. (And by the way, I love the blue dress at the beginning--beautiful color!)
ReplyDeleteI am fortunately able to wear some of my vintage to work (I'm the marketing coordinator for a bank). There's a lot I don't wear, though! I tend to stick with pencil skirts and simple midis with blouses, though I have a few shirtwaist and "wiggle" dresses I wear as well. I definitely tone it down, but it's nice to still be able to work in my own style.
Cheers!
Jenny
Aw, thank you for the applause!! Making a video really is cringeworthy but I thought it would be good for me! Presentation skills and all that! Sounds like you wear quite similar items to me, it is great to preserve some of one's own style in the workplace! Thanks for the encouragement x
