Picnic Check Dress

I love a black and white print, whether it's stripes, houndstooth, gingham, or a large 'picnic check'.  I've had this F&F dress in my wardrobe for a few years now, but it never fit properly.  Until now!  Hurrah!

The cardigan has a little dog on it, I was sold when I saw it!  I don't have pets in real life, I find if they're on clothing they're much easier to look after.

Picnic Check Dress

Black and white dress, F&F at Tesco (old)
Pink wedges, Bertie
Green dog motif cardi, Laura Ashley (old)
Pink lipstick, Classic Rose by Boots No. 7

This was the first day I wore those wedges, and they cut my feet to shreds because I unexpectedly had to do more walking than I intended.  I went to the hairdressers, literally a 5 minute walk, only to find they don't accept card payments, so I had to walk another 5 minutes to the cashpoint, which was out of order, so then I went home to borrow money off the other half, but I went a bit of a long way around, a sort of 15 minute walk, and then I had to walk back to the hairdressers, and then home again afterwards.  So what should have been 10 minutes total of walking turned into over half an hour of walking.  I need to 'break them in' a bit more around the house before more public appearances, they're leather, so they will soften in time.  It's a bit annoying, because Bertie's not a cheap brand, but the leather is quite stiff on these shoes.  I have wedges from cheaper brands where the leather has been like butter from day one.  It was quite a lot of drama for a haircut anyway!

  3. I am of the firm belief that adding dogs to clothes can only improve them! Great Tesco find - they're still my favourites for supermarket chic. I've had so many pairs of shoes that cut my feet to shreds within minutes - and the worst offenders have been my most expensive, Swedish Hasbeens. The leather is SO stiff when you first wear them, you can't believe it'll ever be soft! I do find that once they're broken in they are glove-like and so comfortable, plus the leather lasts ages, so it's eventually worth it... I reckon your sandals will be fine soon, but might take a few more tries! CC x

    1. Dogs and birds, I find, are the great clothes improvers! I'm going to start wearing the sandals around the house more, hopefully they'll be broken in by proper summer!! x

  4. Sweet outfit, I love the dog cardi and dress. I wore some brand new ballet pumps out once without a second thought and they ripped my heels to shreds, it was so painful I could barely walk! I have since learned my lesson x

    1. Ballet pumps can be THE WORST for feet shredding, I find a lot of them cut awfully low over the toes too. Poor lady! x

  5. Ouchy, I am also nursing battered feet. Black ballet shoes that hit the bin after I managed to hobble to work in them. Thankfully I always have plasters and an old comfy spare pair of shoes in my desk drawer!

Lovely bit of gingham by the way.

  7. What a darling dress! And such a cute sweater!

I'm sorry to hear about your feet! Like you, I have experienced expensive leather shoes being quite painful, but they just take time to break in I've learned. I usually wear new shoes out for multiple quick trips, like you intended, and then they are perfect!

Hope your feet heal up soon!

  8. Porcelina I love your blog sooo much! I need to start checking in here as well as via Ave 57 and our outfit posts, because I get obsessed over the clothes and I've totally missed out on your love of afternoon tea and books!

My 'serious job' is recruiting librarians, so I'll enjoy your book posts as much as your fab clothes. Apart from the evening event I attended in London last week, I had to take my Birkenstocks for all the walking around because I knew my feet would end up in agony ;-) x

  10. That is such a cute dress, and I love the adorable little dog on your cardi! :)

Shame about the shoes - hopefully they softened up a little after all of the walking! I used to break in my shoes in the office as I mostly sat at my desk, with only light walking through the day. Was a good way to stretch out the leather a bit :)

I hope your shoes break in soon - if the leather needs a bit of softening, it probably means it'll be more durable so your shoes will last.

I see in the comments that you're going to wear you're cute wedges around the house ... they'd look adorable with rolled jeans and little white socks ... very 50's and would make the breaking in easier!
