Say Cheese

Or should that be 'cheesed off'?  January's been pretty miserable this year.  Endlessly grey and damp days interspersed with days of wind and heavy rain.  Barely a glimmer of sunshine, or any of those cold, crisp days that I would associated with this time of year.  Even on those few days when the sun shines for 5 minutes, I've not been able to get outside as much as I do because of working to a PhD deadline.

Up until a few months ago, my PhD was something that I could manage during working hours (it used to be part of the research in my day job) and on my Friday day off.  Now that I'm planning on submitting by the end of this year, and my research projects at work are no longer related to the PhD, the pressure has really been on.  I've been working on it at any given moment that I can squeeze it in, and I can see pages of references every time I close my eyes.  It's like writing a big book really.  Anyway, on Friday I submitted a massive 25,000 word chapter to my supervisor for review, so I can take a small breather.  While I feel relieved that I've got one big chunk done, the pattern of intense working is going to continue for the rest of the year.

So, that's a long excuse about why these photos are really quite dull.  It was a miserable grey day, when all the colour was leached out of everything, and my outfit's not that exciting.  The most interesting bit is perhaps the castle.  Or maybe the birds?

For those of you who don't know, Caerphilly is also a type of cheese, so it seemed fitting as the title for this post!

I was doing 'Dry January' but decided to let it slide for Burns' Night (which also happens to be Welsh Valentine's Day) so that I could join my husband in toasting some whisky over a haggis.  No, we have no Scottish connections, but we've never needed an excuse to drink a fine single malt.

Right, now that piece of work is finished I think I'm going to look at booking a holiday to somewhere with guaranteed sunshine...

  1. Well done on meeting your PhD deadline! 25,000 does seem quite a lot, and it looks like it's going to be full on for you for the rest of the year. But the sense of achievement you'll get at the end surely will be priceless! I do like your photos, the pale pink coat as well as the castle setting do benefit from the grey sky, and your photos are really catching the mood of these eternal grey Winter days! xxx

    1. Yup, and you can't argue that achievement is one of the best feelings in the world, so I shouldn't complain too much!! It's temporary, all this effort. These Winter days really have seemed eternal this year haven't they? I usually don't mind January at all but this year I can't wait for a new month to start, hopefully with some new weather!! xx

  3. I do not envy that kind of deadline or that kind of stress. What a year this will be for you.

The contrast of the grey and your soft peach coat with the deep green grass is wonderful.

  4. Man, that sounds just crazy! Best of luck with everything. I know (not from personal experience!) that getting a PhD can really consume your life. What a lovely view, though, even if the day was dreary. Love the coat!

  5. How can you think these photos are dull? You have brought a little colour and sunshine to a miserable day! Congratulations on getting your first 25,000 words submitted - fingers crossed for good feedback! Kx

  6. Congratulations on completing a big chunk of your thesis! It takes a lot of discipline to sit down and write. And you look lovely here in a soft colored coat, with your usual glorious backdrops. Thanks for linking up, xo

  7. Hang in there, I’m sure it’ll all be worth it in the end! But yeah, some damn sunshine now and then would be nice as a reward right?! I’m so over this month, I hope February brings nicer skies. Kudos on not caving to the temptation to wear colours as drab as the weather ;) xx

  8. You have my admiration for doing a PhD. It's such a massive amount of work.

January has been rubbish this year - dreadful weather, and I'm sure we've just had the seventh Monday in the month. That's what it feels like, anyway. Pete snapped and booked us a trip back to Seville in September, he'd had enough of the weather.
