Say Cheese

Or should that be 'cheesed off'?  January's been pretty miserable this year.  Endlessly grey and damp days interspersed with days of wind and heavy rain.  Barely a glimmer of sunshine, or any of those cold, crisp days that I would associated with this time of year.  Even on those few days when the sun shines for 5 minutes, I've not been able to get outside as much as I do because of working to a PhD deadline.

Up until a few months ago, my PhD was something that I could manage during working hours (it used to be part of the research in my day job) and on my Friday day off.  Now that I'm planning on submitting by the end of this year, and my research projects at work are no longer related to the PhD, the pressure has really been on.  I've been working on it at any given moment that I can squeeze it in, and I can see pages of references every time I close my eyes.  It's like writing a big book really.  Anyway, on Friday I submitted a massive 25,000 word chapter to my supervisor for review, so I can take a small breather.  While I feel relieved that I've got one big chunk done, the pattern of intense working is going to continue for the rest of the year.

So, that's a long excuse about why these photos are really quite dull.  It was a miserable grey day, when all the colour was leached out of everything, and my outfit's not that exciting.  The most interesting bit is perhaps the castle.  Or maybe the birds?

For those of you who don't know, Caerphilly is also a type of cheese, so it seemed fitting as the title for this post!

I was doing 'Dry January' but decided to let it slide for Burns' Night (which also happens to be Welsh Valentine's Day) so that I could join my husband in toasting some whisky over a haggis.  No, we have no Scottish connections, but we've never needed an excuse to drink a fine single malt.

Right, now that piece of work is finished I think I'm going to look at booking a holiday to somewhere with guaranteed sunshine...
