On my latest holiday to Spain, the timing was perfect to experience some traditional Spanish fiestas!
There were two fiestas while we were there, both full of music, dancing, food and fabulous costumes. Scroll through to see lots of photos, including a few snaps of what I wore (which paled in comparison to the amazing finery that the local ladies were decked out in!).
The 3rd of May is the Day of the Crosses (Dia de la Cruz), celebrated across many towns in Spain. Various localities within each town compete with an artistic cross display, and of course each is accompanied by a street party. The main town display in Nerja was in the square outside El Salvador church, right outside our apartment. From early in the morning I watched as the cross was erected and mounds of fresh rosemary and thyme strewn around it. The scent was wonderful.
Armed with a map from the tourist office detailing the location of the other crosses in the town, we wandered the streets, coming across some rather lively street parties! Later in the day, the main square was packed with dancers all waiting for their turn to perform.
For the occasion I wore a vintage dress (late '70s/early '80s) by San Simone London, with gold polkadots and gold ric rac. The tiered skirt and sheer sleeves said 'fiesta' to me!
Over the following two days, a Folklore Festival (Dia del Folklore) took place. This included a fantastic castanet rendition on a street corner, and a big event in one of the town squares later that evening. Many different music and dance groups performed, and there was a local food and drink tasting afterwards, featuring produce such as Ajo Blanco (a white soup like gazpacho), sweet Malaga wine, and baked sweet treats. You wouldn't believe how fast some of the elderly Spanish people moved when the buffet was pronounced open.
My outfit for this festival was a vintage style tea dress by Pretty Retro. It's my second, you might remember the green leaf print one I have too. I added some flowers to my hair, not to be completely outdone by all the fancy costumes around me.
It was really wonderful to experience these two festivals, it certainly was a lot of fun and made for a memorable visit back to Nerja!

How amazing that you were there when they had the festivals. Doesn't get more authentic than that.
ReplyDeleteYou did well with your outfits too.

Oh, that looks fantastic - I love seeing all the traditional costumes from around Spain. And your outfits look lovely and fitting. (The Spanish dress really well, don't they? I always feel like I'm letting them down if I don't try to look smart there.)
ReplyDeleteWow, what an experience! There's nothing better than having a chance to glimpse true local lifestyles. And your outfit looks so cute and perfect for the moment!

You timed your trip to perfection! I'd love to see those festivals and I wouldn't mind going back to Nerja either, I can understand why you keep going back, it's such a lovely place.
ReplyDeleteI'm going weak at the knees at some of those ladies' costumes and both your dresses look very Spanish and gorgeous, too. xxx
I was reading about these fiestas a few weeks ago and was totally smitten by the beautiful dresses.... so amazing that you were able to experience this festival.
ReplyDeleteHow delightful to have those Spanish Fiestas on your doorstep! Those ladies sure know how to dress up. I'm loving both your dresses too, just perfect for the occasion. xxx
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like so much fun! I love those aerial shots that you got - everyone looks amazing. All those brightly colored dresses are fantastic. I love your pretty polka dot looks, you definitely fit right in.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful fiestas to experience and such beautiful photos! I love the ladies in their back and red polka dot dresses with the stunning crochet shawls around their shoulders. I wonder who made all of those matching outfits! xx
ReplyDeleteWow what an amazing experience, such beautiful photos that you have captured too. I love your outfit too, great dress and hair flowers! x
ReplyDeleteWow, you adjusted your self! Beautiful dress! I have seen once some sort of parade of a catholic fest in Spain. So colorful and lots of music!
ReplyDeleteYou just missed the fiesta of San Isidro, patron saint of farm labourers which is the big one in Nerja. The romeria takes place on his saint´s day 15th May and the procession takes him from the church on the Balcon to the Caves where everyone picnics for the afternoon. It is when the oxen appear -majestic animals groomed for the occasion- See attached https://www.infonerja.com/ultimas-galerias-publicadas/mira-la-ultima-galeria-de-san-isidro-2018- JMR
ReplyDeleteGreat photos and great outfits! I would definitely have joined you in a flower crown. My only experience of a fiesta day while on holiday I was woken up at midnight by what sounded like bombs, but turned out to be obnoxiously loud but invisible fireworks (so we were told by hotel staff the next day). It was genuinely terrifying!! xx
