Don't you feel ready to go sailing off into the sunset, looking at the sea in these photos? I could almost be convinced - for a moment. But I know I shouldn't be deceived. The sea may appear at times to be invitingly calm, especially in such gorgeous evening light as this, but I know all too well that it can change in a heartbeat.
I have to confess that I do not have sea legs. Pretty much every boat trip I've been on (apart from small rowing boats, on a flat and calm reservoir) has ended badly. There was the terrifying sailing trip when I was 21 to the Whitsundays off Australia's coast, where sunshine had given way to a storm which left me clinging to the deck for dear life while the rain lashed down. The boat seemed to have as much water above it as below it. Further back in time, there was the short cruise I went on from with my parents and younger brother, when I was aged about 11. In the calm and balmy waters of the Mediterranean, freak foul weather meant that I ended up being spectacularly sea-sick in the middle of the main lounge.
These days I'm happy to look at the sea, with my feet firmly planted on the shore. I love a bit of nautical style, but I won't be captaining any ships. Instead, I'll wear stripes, and a brooch with an anchor on. And there I will stay on shore, happy to look out to sea and enjoy its presence without its sickening bobbing motion. Dry land is bad enough - unless I'm driving myself, I frequently get a bit queasy in the car on the winding country roads that my part of the world is so full of. And don't even get me started on horses!!

What a lovely post. Although I think I do have sea legs, like you I prefer to look at the sea. In fact, I can't get enough of it and can sit and stare at a favourite seascape for the longest of time. Also, like you, I love nautical style. I'm often drawn to clothing with sailing boat or seagull prints and I have several brooches with a nautical theme as well. Your photographs are fantastic, and I would love to know where they were taken ... xxx

ReplyDeleteI'm with you when it comes to boats - let's stick to dry land! I get fearfully seasick. The last time I went on one on salt water was a boat trip round Mahon harbour (not even out to sea) and I got so nauseous I just had to sit at the back of the boat with my head between my knees. Your stripes and brooch are the best solution.

Lovely style for a lovely setting! I love a good jumper dress (what do they call the style there - pinafore?), and the brooch is the perfect little nautical touch to match the sea view.
ReplyDeleteI don't get out on boats very often, but my guy grew up on them (his dad was from Cape Cod), and we occasionally get out on Lake Michigan. I've never had to sail in a storm, so it's always been a great experience!
