Earthed

We had a very rare earthquake here in Wales over the weekend.  It was Saturday afternoon, at around 2.30pm.  I was on the ground floor of our house, and was walking around.  My husband was sat halfway up on our stairs, talking to me.  To be honest, I didn't notice anything strange, just a prolonged vibration.  I presumed it was a large lorry passing on the main road, until my husband exclaimed "What was that?!" and described how he'd been pushed forward and that the whole house seemed to move.  I laughed at him.  The news came on that evening on the radio and mentioned that there had indeed been an earthquake of 4.4 magnitude, and that the epicentre was under 20 miles from us!  His turn to laugh at me...  The last earthquake here in Wales that I can remember was when I was in Junior school, aged about ten.  My pencil rolled off my desk.  Long may the earthquakes I experience be as underwhelming!

There were no further quakes when we were taking these photos.  We headed to a local spot that was one of the first locations we visited when we were thinking of moving to the area.  I've felt such a connection to the landscape since moving to this part of Wales.  I feel 'earthed'.  It's a dramatic landscape rather than a pretty one.  The skies aren't often blue.  We usually get a somewhat 'moody' atmosphere of mist or rain, coupled with cold West winds.  I was really cold posing for this shoot, colder than I was in the snowy forest last weekend!

Scully Western shirt from Lou Lou's vintage fair, Trousers from Warehouse, Sendra boots from charity shop, vintage neckscarf worn as necktie.

The Western shirt was a purchase from Lou Lou's vintage fair in Cardiff.  It was off a seller's 'sale' rack for £12 because it had some beading missing.  I purchased some spares from Ebay for a few quid and it took me less than 10 minutes to sew them on.  Western shirts can be quite pricey, so I'm really pleased!

  1. We had a little earthquake like that back in the 90s. We were in bed at the time, and at first I thought the students upstairs were about to have a wild party. But my boyfriend calmly pointed it out it was an earthquake, as if it was something that happened every day! Your western shirt is gorgeous and quite a bargain. Look at those amazing sleeve cuffs! The location is so dramatic, I absolutely love it and it even benefits from those brooding skies! xxx

  2. We had one earthquake in the 90s in the Netherlands. I lived alone back then and it was after midnight. I woke up because the closet was shaking and my cats were scared. I thought my house was haunted! It was a strange experience!

  3. Cheers to underwhelming earthquakes! I lived in southern California for a few years, and it was always crazy to feel one.
Such a cute look on you. That shirt is truly fabulous, and this lonely country road is the perfect place for these photos.

  4. Apparently the earthquake could even be felt here in the West Country, though I didn't notice it. Must have been so odd to feel it!

I know what you mean about feeling like you belong to a landscape. I felt like that about Wiltshire long before we lived here, it's like I could feel the history under my feet. You belong to a lovely one! (Who needs pretty when dramatic is more interesting?)

  5. What fabulously moody photos you captured. Kudos to you for standing in the cold to get them.

We had an earthquake when I lived on the Island in Victoria, BC. We had teapots on top of a shelf and they all rattled and threatened to fall off. It was weird and spooky.

  6. Love the outfit - you know I’m a sucker for western style! Such a cute shirt and what a bargain - at your thrifty best again I see ;) I couldn’t quite believe the news about the earthquake as it’s such a strange occurence in the UK. I’ve only ever experienced one in my life and I was overseas. I’m thankful for that though! How scary it must be to live where they happen regularly... xx

  8. I remember the Dudley earthquake of 2002 - our old house backed on to a railway track and we thought a train had hit the house. It was pretty scary at the time. Apparently the Brummies felt Saturday's earthquake but we didn't.
The cowgirl shirt looks wonderful, what a fabulous price. I do love a lazy vintage seller! xxx

  9. We heard about the earthquake whilst driving back from Bristol. It's always a novelty to hear of one in the UK, but thankfully they're never on the scale you see elsewhere.
Your western shirt is fantastic! I can imagine how pleased you are with it. The silly seller could've made a lot more money on it had they just taken the time to add the beads. Ah well, their loss and definitely your gain! xx

  10. Thank-you for braving the cold in order to get these fabulously dramatic outfit photos :) You live in a very unique landscape, which works perfectly as a background for this outfit.
That's crazy about the earthquake- I've never experienced one, thankfully!

  11. Earthquakes to me are terrifying - we've had more than the usual and also they've been stronger. Just this week we had a 5.4 and a week ago one over 6.
I really like your shirt and had not even considered in getting one until I saw yours. For some reason I always thought of them as men's, I was so wrong.

  12. Love that shirt! I remember a couple of earthquakes in New England when I was young. It was a bit unsettling. No pun intended! The landscape in your photo is stunning.
