Home Sweet Home: The 1930s House

FINALLY, my Baby and I are homeowners, and I think we've done pretty well with a fabulous house that was built in 1935.  Squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

It's a beautiful, beautiful home - and as we get through the list of DIY jobs I'll share some before and after pictures of rooms.  Our bedroom isn't looking too shabby seeing as we've only been in a week, and you can't make out the woodchip on the back wall in this pic!

We are feeling incredibly lucky, there are some wonderful original features to behold around the house, including a nice bit of parquet and a porthole stained-glass window.  I'll get around to photographing them soon, once I've finished with all of the boxes still piled up in the dining room!

As soon as I've unpacked a 1930's dress I'll be pretending I'm in an episode of Poirot.  It's going to be fun, fun, fun!!!

Now, is it a step too far to purchase a 1930's sideboard?  Hmm...

  1. I'd say it was ESSENTIAL to purchase the sideboard.

(You probably already know this, but in case you don't, British Heart Foundation furniture shops are great sources of early-mid 20th century bits.)

    1. The plot thickens... we've bought a massive table and chairs, and now the dilemma is...where will the sideboard go?! Yes, BHF are great, I'm on the look out for a piano in one!

  2. Congrats on the new house! I can't wait to see pictures once you have it decorated a bit more. I love old buildings. It's great that yours sounds like it has enough of the "old" left in it. I've been in so many old houses that from the inside look completely modern (that's what happens when you remove the original woodwork, windows, doors, floors, walls....), which always makes me rather sad.

    1. Thanks Kate, it is indeed nice to have a bit of the old left. I'm all for modern conveniences, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms, but you've got to have a bit of old to have a bit of soul I find.
      Pictures will be forthcoming!

    1. Thanks Jessica, it's funny because over here 90% of homes are Victorian, so we expected something a lot older than what we ended up with, but I love the early to mid 20th century so much more than pre 1900, it's much more 'me'!

  8. This first glimpse looks very exciting! That window is great, I've only just got rid of the woodchip on my bedroom walls, I shan't miss it! Hope you're both enjoying this exciting time!

    1. Cheers Katie! Was it much of a mission removing your woodchip?! It's only on one wall (thank the Lord!) but I hear it can be tough to remove?? The window is indeed wonderful, lovely light comes in during the afternoons.
