I turned 36 over the weekend! Gosh. That's getting dangerously close to 40 now. I had some lovely treats though that make the ageing process slightly more worthwhile. The night before my birthday, I came home from yoga to find that the husband-to-be had made me a selection of canapés, including mini lamb burgers and cauliflower pizza bites. We then watched Nashville (we're obsessed) and drank some good red wine. On birthday morning, I was excited to receive a red leather handbag, a '70s style hat, a bottle of Bombay Sapphire gin, a garden trowel (!), some thermoset jewellery (that I'd chosen) and a wonderful selection of books and DVDs, including Good Housekeeping from the 1920s and 1930s and a 1950s guide to Household Management. Hmm, I hope those last books aren't because we're getting married...
As my Baby's birthday is 6 days before mine, we'd held a joint party that day for some close friends. On my actual birthday we popped out for a bit of shopping but it was such a dreary day, so when it turned cold and wet, we headed home, stoked up the woodburner, and spent the afternoon cosying in front of the fire with a bottle of champagne and 'Home Fires' on catchup. Absolute bliss. For the evening we dressed up and stayed in, with a slap-up meal of smoked salmon, and we listened to some Kate Bush on vinyl.
The next day we headed to the seaside, to Clevedon in Somerset. I was reviewing a hotel and wedding venue and was lucky enough to get to stay overnight in one of the most fabulous rooms. A full review of the venue will follow, but here's a sneak peek.
There was an electronic toilet that did scare me slightly. Every time I walked into the bathroom, the seat rose automatically. The seat was also heated (very disconcerting the first time you use it!). But you bet I made use of that fantastic copper bath.
There have been quite a few 'presents to myself' over the last few weeks as well, including a tad more vintage jewellery from some charity shops, a Tamara de Lempicka glasses case, and a black slip that I was told by the seller used to belong to British singer Cilla Black.
That doctors and nurses book was quite
good, which man will nurse Leona marry? The doctor or the lawyer? And
who is that woman who turns up all 'bad girl' in her sports car and
wearing trousers and make-up?! I love the doc smoking on
the cover too. Well worth the 25p or so I paid for it as long as you
can view it through a modern woman's eyes and not take the sexism too
seriously. The tapestry placemats have already had some use and earned their money,
but I have to say that Brigitte Bardot film was really awful! Have you
seen it? Or any other Bardot films? I'd love to hear some
recommendations for some good ones.
I feel as if I have been quite indulgent, and it's back to austerity measures now and rationing.
Happy Birthday! I'd forgotten our birthdays were so close! Your haul was bigger and more varied than mine - probably because these days no one buys me books because of my Kindle ;) Looks like you did well though and I'm loving your curly hair - I don't think I've seen you style it like that before, so pretty! xx
ReplyDeleteHa, the hair was just 'couldn't be bothered to dry it' hair!! But thanks!! Now I'm panicked that I've missed your birthday?! I will email you xx
DeleteThat bath!! You've been so lucky! I hope you had a lovely birthday :)

ReplyDeleteKariss xx
Thanks Kariss x
DeleteIsn't Clevedon where all the slebs used to hang out? It looks gorgeous. I'd never get out of that bath.
ReplyDeleteGreat amount of pressies. Love the sleeves on your dress. xxx
I didn't see any celebs!! Just met a lot of rude people at first, road rage etc., and then my faith in humanity was restored by the ice-cream man who was lovely. x
DeleteHappy birthday!
ReplyDelete(40 is a breeze, trust me. It just swishes by.)
That thermoset jewellery is just lovely, you have great taste.
I've been really inspired by your vintage jewellery collection and have been finding out more about it! I love the thermoset stuff, found a great seller through Vix and will no doubt be purchasing more.... x
DeleteHappy birthday! Looks like you made out well. ;) I would be so excited for those vintage magazines, I love paging through them, even just to look at the ads.
ReplyDeleteI've seen And God Created Woman, and while the actual content of the film was eye-rollingly dumb, I did like watching BB. It's a bit like watching Marilyn for the first time - I thought she was pretty before, but after I watched that I understood why she become such a star.
There is definitely something about the way both actresses move, and the same goes for Jean Harlow too - their charisma and sex appeal comes from movement, no wonder the screen loved them all! x
DeleteHappiest birthday wishes, darling gal! My word, I swear each time you tell us your age, I think that you must have found the fountain of youth. I'd easily believe it if you said you were 26 (or even younger than that). You're so radiantly beautiful and youthful looking (not, of course, that 36 is old, but I think you know what I mean) that it's almost impossible to believe you're in your mid-30s. I'm a little over five years away from that point and hope I look half as young then as you do now!
ReplyDelete♥ Jessica
Thank you Jessica, you're so sweet (and overly generous on the age compliment but thank you!!) xx
DeleteWhat fabulous birthday booty! I particularly love the silver brogues. x
ReplyDeleteThey're SPACE brogues aren't they?! x
DeleteHappy belated birthday. I would have never ever guessed you were 36. 28-30 at the latest. You are almost exactly a year older than me as I turned 35 on May 4th, this year. =)
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday Porcelina! Sounds like you had a great birthday week! And that hotel you got to stay in looks absolutely fabulous! Can't wait to get to read the full review :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Christine! x
