Nineties and Noughties

Some of my wardrobe is from that fashion wasteland that is neither modern nor vintage.  I'm talking about the limbo of nineties and noughties fashion.

The keenly observant among you will notice that I'm wearing a hair scrunchie in these photos.  Lots of people see a scrunchie as just an '80s trend, but they were still around in the '90s.  I definitely wore them back then and remember school friends wearing them also.  That episode of Sex and the City where Carrie berates her boyfriend's scrunchie-wearing book character was probably the final death knell to the scrunchie.  I'm not ready to embrace all scrunchies again, but felt that the bow on this one might help me get away with it.

Occasionally something a bit nineties will pop back into fashion, like slip dresses, which I like because I'll give them a try this time around, after having spent the nineties dressed in oversized checked shirts and jeans.  I always think florals like the ones I'm wearing here are a bit '90s.  Not the stereotypical sunflower, there were lots of little florals on dark backgrounds just like this.

Today the fashion magazines call matching tops and bottoms 'co-ords', as in they co-ordinate with each other.  I just call them matching.  Lots of things can co-ordinate without being an exact match.  I found this top and skirt set amongst some 1970s' dresses at the local car boot sale.  There's no make, just a label saying that it's viscose and French.  It's not modern, but I don't think it's that old, so I'm guessing nineties or noughties.

The shoes are noughties, it must have been around 2005 when I bought them.  They were in the sale at Miss Selfridge and a complete impulse purchase.  I haven't worn them for a long, long time, but on recently rediscovering them, after year upon year when I couldn't bear to throw them out, I got them re-heeled with the intention of wearing them this summer. They're made of a soft suede that's extremely comfortable and I love the striped heel.

Gosh I look pale in these photos.  That's the weak Welsh sunlight for you.

  1. I definitely see scrunchies as 90s! Although yours is much more small and cute than the monstrosities I was forced to wear as a child. I think I've got a lot of stuff from the noughties as I cling onto things that fit for years, but so much of fashion comes round again and again who would know or care?? What you're wearing here looks like the co-ords on ASOS now with the midi skirt! Those pink shoes are exactly what I've been looking for - why is no one making them in this colour now?! Have a great Sunday :) xx

    1. Gosh it's hard to find nice coloured shoes sometimes isn't it? I haven't seen anything similar to these for a long time. Nude pinks and fuschia pinks have been popular, but less of the candy pinks. I think you should resurrect some '90s stuff too! It's fun to dig things out after back-of-the-wardrobe banishment. x

  2. Love the co-ordes and the SITC reference! Such a great find I am jealous! Unfortunately I don't fit into my old fashions

  3. That is such a perfect term ("fashion wastland"). I still have some pieces, chiefly ones that I can take in a more mid-century direction in my closet that fall into that camp, too, with the older (excluding some accessories) being a shirt that I got when I was eighteen. Scrunchies were still huge here in Canada well into the 90s, actually, I'd almost say until the very early 2000s, too, but at least until the end of the nineties. I was always a fan and wish that they didn't get such picked on so much these days. As you show here, they can really look terrific and are obviously very practical to boot.

  4. What a pretty, retro, two-piece floral dress. I am in love with those pink peep-toe shoes, too. You look fabulous, Porcelina.

    Happy Monday!

  5. Oh yes, the print shouts Nineties at me. Love the outfit on you, the knotted top works brilliantly with the midi length of the skirt.
Cow Vintage has basketfuls in their shops (along with those stretchy chokers which looked like tattoos) I loved my black velvet one back in the Eighties (that was probably from Miss Selfridge!) xxx

  9. Striped heels are ace! I love the way your outfit all works together.

In recent years I've come to realise how much the 90s style influenced me, even though I spent the decade all gothed up... it had quite a minimal look, which I still like.

  11. Someone got rid of this outfit??? Impossible. This is like my current spring / summer dream and fits you like a glove. And good for you for brining back the scrunchy!! I've seen it as H&M and wondered if it was making a come back, now I know ....#scrunchieforever!

  12. Love your outfit! It's such a beautiful set and those shoes look really great with it! So flattering on you! Also, it's almost a shame that scrunchies are not popular anymore. They were so comfortable and I'm sure a lot better for your hair than the modern skinny hair ties.

  13. Ahh, I remember that episode from Sex and the City. I do know some people that still wear scrunchies, but I got rid of all of mine awhile ago. I remember a mini-gold scrunchy I had and LOVED. I wore that thing to death. :) This dress is such a beautiful color and pattern and I love photos taken on a bridge :) This fits you to a 'T', too!

  14. I am adoring this outfit on you - it's sexy without being all in your face. And I totally remember that episode of SATC - too funny and yes I will admit that had a scrunhie in my hair on my wrist in the 90s.

Thank you for joining TBT Fashion link up and hope to see you next week. Have a great weekend!

  15. I wore some ugly scrunchies as a 90s child. haha! I can definitely see the 90s vibe of this outfit, but I feel like it's a sleeker version, that actually works well in 2015, too!
