Plaza Espana

Built in 1928 for the Ibero-American Exposition World's Fair, Plaza Espana in Seville is a crescent of buildings set around a Venice-like canal, all within the stunning park Maria Luisa.  I've been very lucky to have travelled extensively, but this place took my breath away!  They filmed parts of Lawrence of Arabia and one of the more recent Star Wars films there.  If I ever owned a palace, I'd like one just like this.

Every surface of Plaza Espana seems to be decorated in some way, whether it's the fabulous ceramic tiles, or ornate stonework.  There are dozens of little alcoves, each representing a region, so that expo visitors could have their photo taken against 'Portugal' or 'Andalucia' or wherever they were from.  They make good little places now to sit and cool off whilst watching the tourists with their selfie-sticks.

Walking around in the heat demands a lightweight cover-up for me, to prevent me burning to a crisp.  Silk is my fabric of choice for these conditions, particularly in smart places like Seville.  It helps me look half decent when I'm wearing no make-up and my hair is plastered to my face!  I really do find it hard to maintain much of a vintage look in any substantial heat.  If anyone has any tips I'd gladly receive them!

  1. Beautiful place! Doesn't get much better than that for photo locations ;) I weirdly find it easier to dress for hot weather than anything else - I always make sure I have a pair of plain dark coloured high-waisted shorts to hand and a variety of more colour sun tops. Easy to mix and match outfits like that and carry along a short-sleeved cotton cardigan in a light cardigan for a shoulder cover-up. I pretty much wear my hair up in some all up or half up 'do the whole time - ponytails are the best for hot weather and they look cute and 50s, which is a bonus. xx

  3. I love the Plaza de Espana! It's been restored in recent years, the bridges used to be all broken. They've done such a good job of it. Did you look at the other pavilions in the park too? It's such a great park, that one.

I don't really do a vintage look on holiday, I just pack the bare minimum of stuff in my case and hope for the best.

  5. I think you've managed to maintain your vintage look pretty nicely. Your dress/kimono is really lovely, and seems so perfect for that gorgeous setting. And seriously, how stunning is it? I can't get over how beautiful Spain looks in all of the images that you've posted.

  6. Stunning setting and fabulous you. If I looked as gorgeous as you without make-up I honestly wouldn't bother.
I wear vintage clothes as I don't like modern ones, I don't consider myself to have a "vintage look" just my own. I get by in India with cotton maxis and huge 1970s sunnies! xxx

    1. I look too much like my brother without makeup for me to make a habit of it!! I love what you wear on your India trips, you always look so serene and as though you're 'wafting' about. xx

  10. Plaza Espana looks gorgeous. Love that mini floral dress you wore. It has sort of a retro feel and a little Asian-inspired too. You look so happy and pretty, Porcelina. =)
