Cardigan Quayside Granary Lofts and Pizza Tipi

We make several trips each year to West Wales, and were last there for 'Octoberfest'.  One of the highlights is always when we get to visit the Pizza Tipi in Cardigan, which is a riverside mini festival of bars, food and music.  It's run by the Fforest enterprise, which also offers a range of accommodation from pods, bell tents and cabins to swanky riverside apartments.  We've stayed on a few occasions now in the apartments, which have been marvellously converted in an old 18th century granary loft.  With Scandi-Welsh interiors, the apartments are fully kitted out for a self-catering stay in comfort.

Location
On the opposite riverbank from the tipi, the apartments are a very short walk from a supermarket, shops and pubs.  There's free parking right next to the apartments.  Cardigan itself is a great location for a base to explore the coast, but there's ample to see and do for a weekend in the town itself.

Facilities
We stayed in 'Ramsay', a split level apartment with one bedroom downstairs and a lounge and kitchen upstairs.  The kitchen is equipped for family cooking (big serving bowls and pans), and there are two bathrooms.  There's also a pragmatic approach to the wet Welsh weather, with a place to store wet coats and boots in the hall, and electric radiators and cosy Welsh tapestry throws to help warm you up.  Don't forget your slippers, as the floors are either slate tiles or painted floorboards.

Little things like tea, coffee and sugar are provided, as well as teatowels and washing-up liquid.  Bath towels are also included, and wonderful bedding you can sink into, but you'll need to bring a hairdryer.  The apartments are obviously aimed at young families or couples, but if you have a baby and pram then the very steep old steps might prove difficult.  It was awkward carrying guitars up!

Value for money
It's not bad value at all - prices start at £260 for 3 nights in an apartment for 2 adults in low season.  Of course summer holiday prices will go up and up, and accommodation in West Wales can get very scarce on a sunny weekend, so booking in advance is always a good idea.  A self-catering option will always be a more affordable choice, as at least you have the option to rustle up a quick and cheap dinner.

As for the Pizza Tipi itself, when the early evening sun is on the water and I'm eating fresh mackerel, glass of wine in hand, there's no place I'd rather be.  It's a truly magical place that I hope you too will get to experience.

We received a small discount on the accommodation price because my husband was performing at the tipi.

  1. What stately, elegant old stone buildings. I've always been drawn to ones like that (ditto for bricks), perhaps because anything even remotely resembling them is so rare in most parts of the immensely young nation I call home.

Thank you for the lovely review and chance to see more of Wales.

  2. That looks really lovely. And the use of Welsh tapestry on the throws and chair is great - it's definitely a local/national craft to be proud of.

I've bookmarked fforest's webpage now; Mr Robot might find himself getting a surprise trip in 2017. (2016 is already mostly planned, aargh!)

  3. You really are getting out and about this year aren't you! Looks lovely - and I've certainly seen worse prices. Funnily enough, I'm coming to Wales next month now. I think this will be the first time I've ever been! I've been meaning to tell you - shame it's for work, only for one night and I'm going to be in Newport which is nowhere near you!! xx

  4. What a fabulous place, a real home from home with the pretty touches like the Welsh Wool blanket and lovely scrubbed wood table. Cardigan is gorgeous, we used to go when I was little. xxx
