Bloggers Spring Meet Up With St. Davids

Last week I popped along to Wahaca, newly opened in Cardiff, for a little Spring blogger meet-up arranged by St. David's shopping centre.  Stylist Claire Rees, who is the fashion journalist for Wales Online, was there to give us a brief overview of Spring trends, and there was quite the assortment of garments from M&S, Vivienne Westwood, Miss Selfridge and more hanging around to give us some inspiration.

I got to wear another Christmas present for the first time, the 'Tiffany' dress from Lindybop.  I'd been putting off wearing it because it's short-sleeved, but the fabric is super soft and cosy and incredibly comfortable.

Now that I shop mainly second-hand, vintage and vintage repro, I don't intentionally do much of a seasonal wardrobe refresh, but there are a few key items that I will be looking for on the high street this Spring.

1) Bikinis
As much as I love retro styles with their high-waists, available from repro boutiques such as Bettylicious, they aren't actually that flattering on my body shape.  After my holiday last year I posted about how I discovered that I only had one functional bikini left - the rest are too old, too big, too small, too impractical.  I bought a fab one from New Look last year, so I'll see if they have a similar style this year.

2) Shoes
Being a UK size 8 in footwear, the only kinds of shoes I tend to find second-hand are boots, of which I have a vast selection.  The more ladylike and elegant styles are harder to find, and I'll confess that I'm really, really fussy!  I choose from a handful of retailers on the highstreet who I know go up to my size (lots of retailers don't - Dune does an '8' but it's only a European 41, when I'm a 41.5 to 42), and also that have decent enough quality.  I would like some block heel ankle-straps to go with my more '60s dresses, and a pair of platform wedges in a '70s style.  Clarks always come up trumps for me.

3) Basic tops
Finally, I have some 'basic' tops that need replacing - some of them are 10 years old.  I would like some 'Bardot' off-the-shoulder style tops for Spring, and as much as I love some of the ones from repro brands, I just can't justify the price difference for an item that's all over the highstreet.  I would also like to snag some polonecks in the sale as I realised this winter that they would be incredibly useful for putting under dresses.  I hope there's some left.

4) Flared jeans
They're back, apparently.  I have a hard time finding jeans to fit my body shape and leg length, but I really am keen to try some flares this year.  I am not committing to buying any, but I want to go and try some on at least.  I've really warmed to '60s and '70s looks in recent years and am enjoying exploring different things.  It's a lot more fun to break out of a style rut.

Are you going to be doing any Spring shopping?  Do you have a list of what you're looking for?

If you've not been to a Wahaca yet, I recommend it.  A chain of Mexican street-food restaurants, the food is a world away from Tex-Mex!  I've previously visited the one in Westfield, London and was very impressed.

If you are about to do some Spring spending and you're in Wales or close by, the shopping centre at St. David's has a 'Spring Treats' offer this week, where if you spend over £70 in the shopping centre, you get a goody bag.  There are lots of vouchers included in the bag, so if you intend to spend big over the next month then it might interest you as you'll then be able to get 20% off at brands such as Coast.

Thanks to all the lovely staff at Grayling PR and St Davids - it was great to have a catch-up with bloggers and staff alike, and meet some of the new staff members!

  1. That looks like a really fun event! I must as admit, troublesome as pants and jeans are for my figure, when I heard that flares were coming back, I pretty much high fived the sky from sheer excitement! :) I lived in, and I do mean lived in, flared jeans from the ages of about 11 to 18 and though they're not 40s - 50s and thus in keeping with most of my other clothes nowadays, I would really love to add a pair back into the mix again. Fingers crossed I can find some locally (our small town is woefully lacking in clothing stores, let alone ones that keep up with today's trends).

  2. I love the Wahaca in Covent Garden. We've got a couple of Tommi Meiers' cookbooks and they're ace.

My current shopping list is: undie sets (harder than you might think at my size, so I feel your shoe pain as I know how awful it is when it feels like all the pretty things are not available for you).
Miss L Fire Betty shoes in either cream or yellow. (I might get both!)
A new old black handbag for work - the handle on my go-to work bag finally died.

    1. Oo new undies!! Always nice, if you can find some that fit properly (bras are another exasperating area for me!!), you'll have to show your purchases on your blog (I don't mean model it, a picture from the shop website will suffice!). And certainly show off the shoes if you get them? I love that Betty style, nice chunky heel so easy to stomp around in, but such pretty colours and a glam peep-toe. Exciting! Happy shopping! xx

    2. Yeah, I've got three midcentury summer dresses in need of shoes, and two would work with yellow and two with cream. I might go for the yellow shoes, as the 'odd dress out' is cream and black, and will look fine with black shoes, whereas the others do need the yellow.

As for modelling the bras... dunno if I'll do it on the blog, but I might be doing it on stage (erk!). Could well be dancing as part of a burlesque chorus line in September.

    1. It's hard when there's a lot of people - I always feel better in a smaller group so understand completely! Catch you next time xx

  4. Firstly, I love Wahaca - I'm lucky that there's one fairly close to where I work if I ever need emergency tacos. And let's be honest, I often need emergency tacos.

Secondly, I really hope you do buy some flares as I think you would look awesome in them. They are MADE for your long legs and slim frame. Yesyes indeed. They would look oh so terrible on me - I tend to look like I'm swimming around in my clothes when I wear flares. No, really. :D xx

    1. I'll be sure to give them a try and post fitting room pics even if I don't buy them! I'm sure there's probably a pair out there somewhere for me. What about culottes? Have you considered those?? I saw someone on Facebook talking about them.x

    2. That meet-up looks like fun! But what finally got me to comment is I'm so curious to know if this restaurant changed the traditional spelling (of Oaxaca) to avoid confusion?! It looks so unusual for a Mexican restaurant name.

    3. The British would never be able to pronounce Oaxaca, that's probably why it's been phoneticised x

    4. Ah, that explains it! I must admit that reading it spelled that way made my brain hurt a little...

  5. Looks like fun! Your outfit was smashing! Very 60's retro. I love the polkadot hose.

I'm trying not to shop very much to be honest. Let's see how long that holds out. After my dog had to have surgery for almost $6000 that has made things a bit tight around here. I'm sticking with thrift stores and shopping in thrift with a list is near impossible.

    1. Ouch, that's a lot - my sister had to pay about that much when her dog was ill. I agree that wish lists with thrift takes years to accomplish!! Good luck with being frugal. It's so hard.

  6. Looks like fun! I wish I wasn't blogging from the middle of nowhere so I could attend fun events like this! I too am a size 41.5-42 (10 US) so I know what you mean about finding shoes that still look ladylike at our size, it can be tough! I love those dotted tights you are wearing too! I have nude back-seam tights and a vintage wicker purse on my wishlist currently, so I will probably be making another What Katie Did order soon.

    1. You've just reminded me that I have at least 2 pairs of WKD stockings unworn somewhere, I have to find them now it's Spring! I've always wanted a vintage wicker purse - I'm off to a vintage fair this weekend so maybe I'll spot one. Good luck in the hunt for yours! x

  7. That dress looks absolutely fab on you, the tights are great, too.
As you know, I don't shop new. I don't need anything but if I spot something in a charity shop or a car boot then I buy it. It makes for a chaotic wardrobe! xxx

  8. No Spring wardrobe list for me, but then you never know what you might see in a chazza! And I have to admit that a few warmer days has me thinking about sandals...
G;ad you had a fun time at your bloggers day, you look lovely in your dress and spotty tights. xxx

  9. Ooh, this looks like so much fun! I'm sure there must be blogger meetups like this in Chicago, but I'm not super connected to the community, and I never hear about them. Maybe I should try to get the ball rolling myself...
That Lindy Bop dress is really fabulous on you! I feel like you rock 60s mod and 70s glam styles so well. I think you would actually kill it in the flares, if you actually do get some - you're so tall and leggy, basically the kind of woman that they were designed for.

    1. Reaching out to other bloggers is something I've only started to do recently, because it's hard when you're on your own isn't it? See if there's a Chicago bloggers network on Facebook as a starting point?? I'm meeting up with some more bloggers this weekend, I'll let you know how it goes!! I hope I don't embarrass myself!!

I'm actually getting a bit antsy for a pair of flares, I might try some on this weekend, eep!!! x
