We had a partial eclipse of the sun here in the UK last weekend. There was a strange, hazy light, and we headed up the hill behind our house to see if anything dramatic would happen, like a dark shadow covering the valley below. Disappointingly, nothing seemed to happen at all. We didn't have those eclipse glasses or use a pin-hole camera, but a friend was more lucky and managed to take this photo using eclipse glasses in front of her camera lens.

So, we just took some quick outfit snaps while we waited for the darkness that never came. These photos aren't retouched as you can tell from the amount of litter in some of these shots - why do people think a scenic look out point is a bin?!

Did you see the eclipse??

The University science/astronomy society decided to have their eclipse thing in front of my work. They said there would be about 10 -20 people and then decided to advertise on the internet! There were actually about 200 people in the end which would have been fine if the pavements weren't being dug up so they were all wedged into the front entrance of the business school. We had 89% of the eclipse so it was pretty cool and got very dark. You could stand with your back to it and watch it in the smoked glass windows.
ReplyDeleteAgain I cannot believe the difference in weather you seem to have compared to Oxford!!!
That is such a funny story about all of those people turning up!! Sounds like you all had a great view. Don't be fooled by the pictures - it was just 2 days of sun and it's been hailing, frosty, wet and windy since!! X
DeleteYou look fantastic! I really like the design and colour palette of that dress. It's gorgeous on you, dear gal!
ReplyDeleteHand on my heart, that is one of my favourite styles ever, too, though I rarely wear it and couldn't even tell you the last time I was photographed in it. My heart will always belong to the 40s and 50s first and foremost, but you know, the older I get, the more I feel like branching out a bit with my usual wardrobe choices and folding some great 60s and 70s looks, especially those of a boho/folksy nature, into the mix as well.

Thank you!
DeleteI have had so many conversations recently with vintage style bloggers and lovers who are going through a stage of branching out into eras other than the one they fell in love with first. We might see that trickle through on blogs - maybe in a few years we'll all be in hostess gowns and smocks?! X
I really wanted to see the eclipse, but sadly I was on the wrong continent. Booooo!
ReplyDeleteBut you look really lovely in this dress. Pandora is also a big inspiration for me as well (I would obsessively page through her lookbook before I found out that she was a blogger), and definitely see her in this dress. It looks smashing on you. I love the colors and the patter, and the waist detail with the belt is so pretty.

Because I love this dress so much, I don't wear it that often, which is ridiculous really!! I need more boho, that will be my thrifting mission this year x
DeleteYou know I'm a huge fan of boho. This is a great outfit and all of the pieces would fit happily in my closet : )
ReplyDeleteLooks like a lovely day. Too bad about the eclipse.
bisous

Maybe it's good there's an Ocean between us so I don't have to worry about leaving my closet unattended... ;)
DeleteI've always thought the folky, boho thing looks fab on you - and here you are proving me right ;) Monsoon are just such quality, they can't really do any wrong, can they?! Which is why their stuff probably doesn't end up given away as much... I was in the Peak District for the eclipse... where we had constant cloud cover until the afternoon of that day when it was glorious sunshine. Typical! xx
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame you didn't get to see the eclipse either!
DeleteI definitely want to explore boho and more 60s and 70s looks this summer. Got my eye on Ebay for a few pieces!! X
Beautiful vintage dress Porcelina and I love the styling. Paisley is a favorite print of mine. =)
ReplyDeleteEast are very good for the boho stuff; a lot of their items are made ethically in India. They're really pricy, but you can get some bargains if you keep an eye on the clearance section of their website. (Oddly, they also do the odd retro blouse; I got my 40s-style pussybow one there.) That looks really suits you. It's not a style I can wear, it just feels monstrously wrong on me with my minimalist tendencies, but I do love it on other people. (I love all those old shots of Talitha Getty in Marrakech; so hippie-luxe.)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip about East, I just had a peek and love some of their stuff! Will keep an eye out for it second-hand now.
DeleteI love the term hippy-luxe, that's perfect! X
Beautiful boho/cowgirl look. Simply chic.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos. It was a wonderful morning in Walsall, too! I wore a welding helmet so I don't think I'd have looked half as glamorous as you.
ReplyDeleteThat's my style, too, albeit full length and 40 years old! Monsoon do some great stuff and I'm surprised how often it crops up in charity shops considering the prices they charge. I'd kill for those boots. xxx
A welding helmet?! I won't ask!!
DeleteThe boots were a present and when I got them the leather was completely naked, so they've now been treated for waterproofing. I think he only paid £2 for them!! X
I went outside as it was a bit darker here, but sadly I didn't have eclipse glasses so I could see it. My father took pictures, but I haven't looked at them yet. It was so dark inside and outside it looked like it was sunset, the sun was a reddish shade :)
ReplyDeleteYes I thought that the light went a bit pinkish too, very odd! X
DeleteLove the dress and boots, you could be out of the movie 'Almost Famous'. You have the most amazing clothes! We tried to view the blood moon awhile back but got to sleepy before it arrived!
ReplyDeleteOo I haven't seen that film for ages, I should watch for some wardrobe inspiration! A blood moon sounds most dramatic x
DeleteSuch cute outfit! I found there are a lot of my old clothes I am still wearing them and loving them. I love the dress you were wearing. The color, the patterns, the cut are just so boho chic.

What a beautiful view in your photos and your outfit goes great with it. The last photo is my fave, the dress looks great with the green military jacket!
ReplyDeleteThis is something I definitely pet peeve on as well. People that just toss their trash wherever they are standing or driving. I'm like damn, do you toss it on the floor in your house as well? Especially baffling are those pieces of trash just 3m away from the next bin. Oh I could rave on for hours on this topic.
ReplyDeleteI got to watch the eclipse through lots of clouds here in Italy, and the light was more like on, infact a very cloudy day rather then the eery dark you get with total eclipses.
That said, your dress is very pretty and I always loved the combination of that kind of dress with cowboy/biker boots :)

Makes me so sad that people are so disrespectful and liters anywhere they please. Whenever I see someone flick their cigarette buds from the car to the street, I want to to pull them over and issue a ticket for littering. I love this dress on you. I love the boho look on others but doesn't feel so right on me.
ReplyDeleteThank you for joining TBT Fashion link up and hope to see you next week.

Love that dress! What a beautiful view, you look gorgeous! xo Andrea

I remember we had a solar eclipse where we are a few years back. While the sky didn't get super dark it did get noticeably darker... like it was twilight. Also the shadows from the leaves in the trees all showed little crescent moons. It was surreal!
