Gin Review: Opihr

In a sea of green and blue gin bottles on the supermarket shelf, the be-tasseled red and gold bottle of Opihr called to me.  Promising botanicals from the ancient spice route, "the name itself hints at an exotic world lost in time, a place of treasure and wonder.  To venture across this landscape is as much a step into the unknown as any road trip or lost weekend."  Gosh, that's a lot to fit in to a bottle.  As a lady who has indeed lost a weekend or two to gin in the past, I felt it my duty to purchase a bottle and give it a most thorough review.

Opihr gin review

The most recent gins harping on about their botanicals have been using fairly British botanicals - the herby, wet English garden type that remind me of rainy afternoons where we're huddled in the cricket pavilion, waiting for the skies to clear so that the match can start up again.  Opihr's botanicals are entirely Eastern, all hot and dusty, with a sizeable hit of cardamon along with the black pepper and coriander.  There's something crisp about it too, despite all that warmth.  I found it particularly smooth when chilled to ice-cold, and although it's unusual flavours can cause momentary confusion, it's still umistakeably gin.  The juniper is quite discernible, but at perhaps much more a subtle level than in other gins where it confronts you head on.

One of the recommended accompaniments to Opihr is a fresh chili, but I think that would be piling heat upon heat, and I would personally suggest you return to that now socially-unacceptable gin garnish of a slice of lemon - the citrus cuts through all that warmth from the spices, and is really quite the complimentary partner to the black pepper and coriander.  I've also heard the suggestion of a slice of orange, or a stick of cinnamon and I could see those working well too.

I can't usually tolerate gin neat, but this is such an unusual gin that I found it most pleasant and warming for sipping.  In a gin martini, I found Opihr to work fantastically with a lemon twist and a good extra dry vermouth.  It even passed the non-gin-drinker test - a sip from my husband-to-be usually results in a face full of disgust at any gin-based drinks, but on trying my Opihr martini, the face was one of curiosity, with a 'not bad' comment.

Opihr gin is going to be controversial for straying so far from its very British relatives, and it's true that it's not for the faint of heart - if you're a gin adventurer though, you may find this to be a real treat.  For the gin lover, the fantastically ornate bottle would also make a superb present.  I have plans for that tassel when I've finished the bottle.

Opihr is available from all good supermarkets at around £22 (currently on offer at Tesco for £18).  I selflessly purchased this bottle and drank it almost entirely to ensure I could give a well-researched review for you dear readers.

  1. Jon loathes Gin, too! This sounds ace. Mind you, after 7 days without alcohol I reckon even a bottle of Thunderbird would be an attractive prospect! xxx

  2. I love spiced spirits, but even your detailed, 'this is not just any gin' review can't convince me to give up my self-imposed ban... ;) xx

  3. I saw Gin and just had to read more, well that and the fact that I love your blog! I have to say what better reason to work your way through a bottle of gin - extremely altruistic I think! My other half hates Gin but i'm sure I can persuade some of the girls for a night of pampering and gin! Might have to pop to Tesco! Great review :)

    1. I thought it important to make 'gin' the very first word in the title. Whittles out the non-gin lovers straight away. Thank you so much for your kind words - and yes, go get a bottle!! x

  4. I LOVE gin! And I had no idea that a slice of lemon was considered unacceptable... A good old G&T with ice and a slice does me just fine.
I think you might need to buy another bottle so you have two tassels. Can't imagine what you might do with them...! xxx

  7. I've turned into a big gin drinker in the past couple of years as my taste for bitterness has grown. This sounds really intriguing, I'll have to see if I can find it here in the states! I love that it's got such unusual spices, I would love to see what kind of cocktails I could come up with for it.

  8. Oh my goodness, it sounds delicious and looks gorgeous too! I'd love a glass of that with a generous slice of cucumber - maybe a curry on the side too, ALL my favourite things!!! Katie x
