What I Found Secondhand Lately

We've been to a few good car boot sales and charity shops in the last week or so.  Here are the highlights of what I found!

second-hand bargains
Clockwise from top left: New Look tea dress with flutter sleeves (£2), Vintage Cacharel shirt in Liberty print (£2), vintage St Michael leather handbag (£2), summery top (£1).

I adore flutter sleeves.  They speak '1930s' to me, so I was pleased to find a New Look tea dress with such sleeves for a mere £2.  That same weekend, I found a Cacharel blouse in Liberty print fabric.  I was a bit unsure about whether it's 'me', but as my style seems to be ever-evolving (to the point that my other half told me I'm turning into Kate Bush the other day when I appeared wearing a purple silk maxi dress!) I think I'll at least give it a go, and perhaps wear the blouse either under a pinafore dress or tucked into a pencil skirt.

second-hand bargains
Clockwise from top left: M&S jersey dress (£2), Yumi buses and teapot print dress (£2.50), M&S jersey top, brand new with tags (£1), Get Cutie floral pencil dress (£2.50).

Get Cutie is a Brighton based brand that produces handmade dresses in vintage silhouettes in a variety of prints.  The dress I found with it's little pansy print would have been £120 new, so to pick it up for just £2.50 was a steal!  I have nearly bought from them in the past, but was a bit concerned about the sizing - it seems my concerns were justified as the dress I've bought is a size larger than I normally wear, which is worth bearing in mind if you come across this brand.  The only thing is that I think it's designed for someone with larger bosoms, so I have a bit of a gape at the neckline.  I might see if I can fix that.

The teapot and buses dress is a tad more twee than my usual choice, but it will do well for any particularly British occasions of celebration, such as jubilees or charity tea-parties.  Again, it's a size up from my usual size 12.  I do find Yumi runs a little small, apart from their tunic dresses which seem to be cut quite generously.

Non-clothing purchases included that lovely red gingham tablecloth that I showed off in my post about my new favourite coffee, the inevitable brooches, and a 1950s film annual with Elvis on the cover.  On a recent trip to Aberystwyth I bought two pairs of shoes.  First, a pair of dressy evening sandals, and then another pair of black heeled Clarks brogues.  I already have a pair of black heeled Clarks brogues, but these have a chunkier heel and I hope will feel more stable for walking around than the others I own.  Both pairs of shoes look like they've only been worn once.

  1. Oooh, those are some good buys - as you say, the Get Cutie dress is a bargain, and I love that one with the flutter sleeves.

I can see you working a 70s look well - there was a big deco revival then, what with the effect of Biba, and films like The Great Gatsby and The Sting. You'd rock an Ossie Clark style dress. Though if I catch you dressing like a Bay City Rollers fan, I'm staging an intervention...

  3. Those brogues...oh my word...swoon! I have a similar black pair and an even more similar warm brown pair (with higher heels than here though) and they both my absolute, number one go-tos for footwear when it's not snowy outside during the colder months (and sometimes even if it is! :)). Great finds across the board, honey. Thank you for sharing them with us!

  4. I am so envious of those brogues! Knowing how amazing Clarks brogues must be, in particular! Also I can't wear flutter sleeves because something about how top-heavy they make me just doesn't work at all, but I love it when you do. Wear all the flutter sleeves for me please :D xx

    1. Well the flutter sleeve dress will feature in the next outfit post this coming Sunday! I wouldn't have thought flutter sleeves would cause a problem for you, it always amazes me how individual everyone is in what suits them and what doesn't. It's a minefield isn't it? I might have to wait until the end of summer to wear such chunky black brogues, but they'll be worth waiting for xx

  6. Some great finds! I love an angel sleeve, and that 70s-does-30s style is one of my favourites. Cacherel with a Liberty print - very nice, classic quality. Get Cutie dresses do run small, and have no give in the fabric - I found one in a charity shop but sold it on Ebay. It was too tiny for me!
    Love those heeled brogues. xx
